Picture the Dream: Interactive Puzzle Mural

The "Picture the Dream" exhibit was a display of art illustrations from children's books that are about civil rights movements. This exhibit was part of the Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Brown vs Board of Education.  I served on the planning committee of this exhibit as the lead artist and was invited to design and create an interactive art element for the exhibit. I suggested that we involve the community by holding a discussion session and allowing them to help contribute to the project. I developed the idea to design a 5ft by 10ft wall puzzle of 1ft square pieces that community members could paint individually by a paint by number method during paint sessions. To produce the art design, I brought on a local artist to collaborate with me. We help an open discussion session where we talked to children about their experiences with discrimination and prejudices, then we asked them to describe the type of future they wanted to live in. Their answers were peaceful, kind, happy, innocence, fun, healthy and inclusive. In our final art design, we used those words as clouds in a picture of four children daydreaming about their future in a lotus pond. Then, I digitized the design and separated it into 50 pieces and hired a craftsman to laser cut the design onto 1/8inch thick and 12in square hard panel boards. Next, I numbered each color section on each board to coordinate with paint colors. This method was used so that community members could paint their own individual board in a paint by number style during the community paint sessions. One paint session was held at the Kansas Discovery Children's Center, and the other was held at the Shawnee and Topeka Public Library. Each board had its own unique touch because they each were painted by different children and parents. After all the Boards were painted, we outlined the design lines and sealed the surfaces. Also, we adhered velcro strips to the back of each board so pieces would adhere to a velcro wall in the exhibit space so the children could work together to put the mural puzzle together. The interactive wall puzzle was revealed during the opening reception ceremony of the "Picture the Dream" Exhibit. Both the process of creating this project and the finished product embodied the theme of working together to create something beautiful.
